Looking for the aloha in life

Recovery Day

The title should actually read Recovery Trip because that is what I was hoping for this vacation. I was really banking on the healing waters of the Pacific to cure my various ailments that have plagued me for basically all of 2019. I don’t like to sound whiny but I’m going to name them here only so that in a year or two, when I am (hopefully) feeling better, I can read this and remember to feel grateful for my health because honestly, I feel kind of shitty these days. The whack-a-mole game I play every day trying to gauge which pain is worse and which one I need to make sure I address today is getting very old. Earlier this year it was the disc herniations in my neck. Then it was the Spondilolisthesis at L4/5 that, according to one dr (and thankfully not another) needs to be fixed with fusion surgery. Currently, it’s Frozen Shoulder. Actually, it’s Frozen Shoulders… yes I’m in that lucky small percentage of women that get it in both shoulders. At the same time. My left is much worse than my right, thank goodness and since the left started first, I’ve been able to, so far at least, hold off on losing as much mobility in my right by starting PT earlier in the “freezing stage.” This is the first of three stages and can last up to a year. Yes, you read that right. I should get mobility back within 3 years, according to my doctor. It’s just a bit depressing until I am reminded that there are a lot worse ailments I could be enduring right now.

So, you can see how I might have been hopeful that a Pacific “swim” (swim is in quotes because moving around in the ocean without any arm movements can’t honestly be called a swim) combined with relaxation, fresh air and plenty of good healthy food would work their magic. But alas, I still can’t raise my arm above my head or behind my back. I honestly don’t know what I would do without my awesome hubby in all this. He cooks, he cleans, he helps me dry my hair, not to mention he helps me with Casey and does it all with a smile. He is my left arm and my rock.

Anyway, back to more fun topics. We enjoyed a recovery day yesterday even if I am not actually in recovery yet. Other than Dan taking a SCUBA dive trip off the waters near Kawaihae, we lounged by the pool, the beach, and off our back porch. Mike and I took a long walk, worked out (well, he worked out, I did my PT) ate a juicy burger at Kohala Burger (highly recommended!) and just generally relaxed for the day. A little shopping trip for some Hawaiian shirts for the boys and a cute little movie called Brittany Runs A Marathon ended our day. I actually made it past 9 pm finally!

I'm a mom living in Texas trying to find the aloha spirit in everyday life with my husband and 2 teenagers. Until I can retire in Hawaii, I will continue to love good old fashioned walks with my dog, dabble in home decor, and pretend to play the ukulele. I am passionate about my family, music, and supporting other families, like ours, who have kids with Down Syndrome.

  1. So sorry to hear of your health challenges, Angela. John had to have shoulder repair a number of years ago. He didn’t have a torn rotator cuff, but did have to have his bursa removed and some other clean up. It took about 6 months to heal from that. To this day, he really can’t play golf any longer as it tends to aggravate it, but other than that, he is finally back to normal. Glad you are enjoying the surf and fresh air. It looks lovely. I’m looking at pouring rain, up to 3″ today in Kentucky.
